Graded To Drain Properly

Built to drain right

A patio that sheds water away from your house

The single most common patio mistake is a slab graded flat, or worse, sloped toward the foundation. Every patio and walkway we pour gets a deliberate fall away from the house — usually about a quarter-inch per foot — before it ever becomes a drainage or basement problem.

From there it's the same as everything else we pour: proper base, reinforcement where it's needed, and a finish that suits how you'll use the space — entertaining, a pool surround, or a walkway that just needs to hold up to salt and shovels every winter.

Grading & drainage

The grade gets decided before the pour, not after

We set forms to carry water away from the house and toward wherever it's supposed to go — a lawn, a drain, or the street. Around a pool, that also means keeping the deck from pooling water against the coping.

Reinforcement goes in next: wire mesh for lighter loads, rebar where a deck or walkway needs to carry more. Control joints get planned in at this stage too, so cracking happens in a straight line you chose, not wherever the slab decides.

Pour day

Finished for how you'll actually use it

A patio for entertaining gets a different finish than a pool deck that needs slip resistance in bare feet, and a side walkway needs to shed snow and salt more than it needs to look decorative. We'll talk through the trade-offs before we quote, not after.

Light foot traffic is fine after 24–48 hours; give it about a week before furniture, planters or heavy use go back on.

Common questions

Before you call

What homeowners ask most before we quote a patio, walkway or pool deck.

How much does a concrete patio cost?

Size, existing drainage, tear-out and finish all move the number. We come look and give you one fixed price in writing, free of charge — no phone-call ballparks.

How do you keep water away from my foundation?

Every patio and walkway is graded with a deliberate fall — typically about a quarter-inch per foot — moving water away from the house toward the lawn, a drain, or the street.

When can I put furniture back on a new patio?

Light foot traffic is fine after 24 to 48 hours. Give it about a week before furniture, planters or heavier use.

Do you build pool decks?

Yes — pool deck surrounds with slip-resistant finishes and reinforcement sized for the extra water and sun exposure they see.

Do I need a permit for a patio or walkway?

Usually not for a ground-level patio or walkway replacement. We'll flag it at the estimate if your project is the exception.

Can you match the finish to my existing steps or driveway?

Often, yes — colour and pattern matching depends on what's there now and how weathered it is. Bring it up at the estimate and we'll tell you honestly how close we can get.
