Not every pour is a driveway or a patio. A garage floor, a shed pad, an AC or generator pad, a sidewalk — these all get sized differently depending on what's going to sit or drive on them, but they're built the same careful way underneath.

We size the thickness and reinforcement to the load the slab actually needs to carry, build a proper compacted base under it, and finish it appropriately — a hard-troweled finish for an interior floor, broom for anything exposed to weather.

A shed pad and a garage floor rated for a loaded pickup don't need the same reinforcement, and pouring them the same way is how you end up paying for more steel than you need, or not enough. We size thickness and reinforcement to what the slab is actually going to carry.

Where a slab ties into an existing footing or foundation, we set dowels so the new pour is structurally tied in rather than just butted against it.

Before you call

What homeowners ask most before we quote a slab, pad or sidewalk.

What counts as a "slab" versus a driveway or patio?

Anything flat and functional that isn't primarily decorative or a vehicle driveway — garage floors, shed and equipment pads, sidewalks, steps and sport pads. If you're not sure which page fits your project, just call and describe it.

Wire mesh or rebar — which do I need?

It depends on the load. Wire mesh is fine for light-duty pads; anything carrying a vehicle, heavy equipment, or tied into a structure typically needs rebar. We'll spec it correctly at the estimate.

Can you pour a new slab over an old one?

Usually not recommended — an old slab is rarely a reliable base, and it hides the ground condition underneath. In most cases we'll tear out and start with a proper compacted base.

Do I need a permit for a shed or equipment pad?

Depends on size and municipality. Small pads often don't need one; larger pads or anything tied to a structure might. We'll flag it at the estimate.

What's a vapour barrier and do I need one?

It's a plastic sheet placed under an interior slab to stop ground moisture from working up through the concrete. Standard on garage and basement floor pours.

My slab is cracked — does it need replacing?

Not always. Hairline cracking and minor settling can often be repaired or resurfaced. We'll give you an honest read at the estimate.
