Stamped concrete isn't a different material — it's the same driveway, patio or walkway slab, textured with rubber stamping mats and coloured before it sets. Underneath, it gets exactly the same base, reinforcement and grading as anything else we pour.

How it's done

Stamped before it sets, sealed once it's cured

The pour and finishing steps are identical to a plain slab — base, forms, reinforcement, screed and float. Colour goes in either mixed through the mix (integral) or dusted on as a hardener for more depth, then the pattern is pressed in with textured mats while the concrete is still workable.

Control joints get planned to follow the pattern lines wherever possible, so they read as grout lines instead of cracks. Once it's cured, we seal it to protect the colour and give it sheen.

Living with it

Slip resistance and upkeep, honestly explained

Stamped textures add grip over a smooth trowel finish, and we can add a slip-resistant additive to the sealer for pool decks and steps. It's not maintenance-free — expect to reseal roughly every two to three years to keep the colour from fading and to protect against salt.

Structurally it's the same as any concrete slab: it can crack if the ground underneath moves, which is exactly why the base and reinforcement matter as much here as anywhere else we pour.

Before you call

What homeowners ask most about pattern, colour and upkeep before we quote a stamped finish.

Does stamped concrete cost more than plain concrete?

Yes — the extra labour for colour and stamping adds to the price. It's still typically less than natural stone or pavers covering the same area. We'll give you a fixed number for both so you can compare.

Does stamped concrete crack?

It can, the same as any slab — cracking is about what's happening underneath, not the finish on top. We plan control joints along the pattern lines wherever possible so any cracking that does happen is far less noticeable.

Is stamped concrete slippery when wet?

The texture itself adds grip over a smooth trowel finish, and we can add a slip-resistant additive to the sealer for pool decks and steps — worth flagging at the estimate if that's where it's going.

How often does it need to be resealed?

Roughly every two to three years, depending on sun and traffic exposure. Skipping resealing lets colour fade and the surface wear faster, especially with winter salt.

Can you stamp my existing driveway or patio?

Not directly on top of cured concrete — stamping happens while the concrete is still workable, so it generally means a new pour. In some cases a resurfacing overlay is an option; we'll tell you honestly if it's a good fit.

What patterns and colours can I choose from?

Ashlar slate, York stone, cobblestone, wood plank and herringbone brick are our most requested, in a range of colours and shading. Bring a reference photo and we'll tell you how close we can match it.
